Job Description
The General Manager reports to the Board of Directors via the Commodore. The General Manager is responsible for the smooth running of all club operations. The General Manager possesses an intimate knowledge of the club’s policies and procedures and successfully carries out the directives of the Board of Directors as guided by the club’s mission statement and the club’s policies and procedures.
The ideal candidate is an innovative problem solver and forward thinker who possesses excellent interpersonal skills. The candidate has a strong, measurable record of successful personnel and financial management. He/she also has the business skills to develop short and long term strategies with input and approval from the board in order to position the club for success well into the future.
Position Duties
  • Manages successful communication and relationships among the Board of Directors, club owners (members), vendors and staff to facilitate smooth operations overall.
  • Attends all Board of Directors meetings and Finance Committee meetings as needed, as well as ad-hoccommittee meetings.
  • Manages all club assets, including facilities and equipment.
  • Supervises galley and bar managers in the running of club dining and bar facilities, ensuring highest levels of quality are met. (Annual Food sales are $200K; Beverage sales are $150K)
  • Keeps all club licenses and insurances current, accurate and up to date.
  • Ensures the club is operated in accordance with all applicable local, state and federal laws.
Personnel Management
  • Supervises a staff of 20-25 permanent and seasonal club personnel, including bar, grounds and pool staff.
  • Is responsible for recruitment, hiring, scheduling, and employee training and development.
Financial Management
  • Manages annual operating budget of $850,000, recording and analyzing financial statements, managing cash flow, and establishing controls to safeguard funds.
  • Provides financial reports to the board according to a set schedule and format.
Member Services
  • Is visible and available to club members at all times, ensuring their expectations are met and often exceeded.
  • Coordinates marketing and outreach to promote the club’s services and to recruit new members.
  • Manages all club events, initiating a variety of activities and occasions to foster member engagement and good will.
Candidate Qualifications
  • 3+ years of management experience, or equivalent
  • Extensive personnel and financial management experience (3+ years)
  • Experience with member relations, or equivalent interpersonal experience
  • Ability to successfully execute high quality special events, including food and beverage service in unusually high-volume events (regattas)
  • Familiarity with all basic PC software and general ease with technology required; knowledge of technology needs for yacht club operations a plus
  • Bachelors Degree
  • Experience managing a private club
  • Ability to manage concurrent responsibilities across business sectors
Located in the Historic Light House Depot, the St. Joseph River Yacht Club was established in 1913 to foster a casual environment for boating on the St. Joseph River and Lake Michigan. The 122-year-old clubhouse, on the inner harbor of the St. Joseph river, was acquired in 2003 and has been the home of the club ever since. The purpose of the member-owned club is to promote boating, swimming and good fellowship among its members. The club endeavors to do this in an informal and welcoming environment.
The St. Joseph River Yacht Club has 540 memberships (approximately 1300 members). The clubhouse has staff offices, a kitchen, multi-floor dining, a bar and restrooms. Waterfront facilities and services include a riverside bar and grill, dock, moorings, and visiting yacht amenities including an Olympic sized pool, children’s play area and bathhouse.
The club offers daily dining options in the summer months, a buffet on Fridays, and regular special events. The club is host to many sailing events including our own Rhumbline Regatta, as well as hosting the annual Tri-State Regatta party, private parties and weddings.
The total club budget is $850,000.00 with food service generating $200K and beverage service of $150K. There are 20-25 employees during the summer operation. Club oversight is provided by the Flag Officers and an all-volunteer council of committee heads. The Club is open 7 days per week from late May through early September and 4 days per week from mid-March through mid-May and mid-September through December. The club is open annually from March 17th through December.
Dock Facilities
Temporary riverside docking, no marina service or boat slips are owned by the club.
Swimming Facilities
Outdoor heated swimming pool and bathrooms.
Other Athletic Facilities
Located on the St. Joseph River with direct access to Lake Michigan, the club is immediately adjacent to the St. Joseph Junior Foundation (sailing school), West Basin Municipal Marina, and Tiscornia Beach.
Dining Facilities
  • Rhumbline Bar and Grill (seasonal riverside outdoor facility with full bar and limited menu).
  • Keepers Bar (interior first and second floor casual and fine dining venue with full bar, elevators and seating for 100+).
Special Club Features
  • Third floor private event/meeting room with elevator access, a limited bar, bathrooms, AV equipment and seating for 85-100.
  • The building is listed on the National Historic Register.
  • All floors have full or limited wait-stations and updated facilities.

Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary will be negotiated and commensurate with experience.
  • Paid vacation and a performance bonus are offered as part of the compensation package.

Special Employment Conditions
