Assistant Manager Consumer Lending - St. Jospeh, MI
The Assistant Consumer Lending Manager is responsible for the day to day operations of the Consumer Underwriting area, including coaching, performance management, onboarding, and scheduling. Assistant Consumer Lending Manager also maintains a higher level of lending authority and is called upon to handle decisions being challenged by the front line or our dealer partners.
The Assistant Consumer Lending Manager also provides credit and collateral risk analysis of high-risk loan applications ensuring that Credit Union loan policies and are adhered to and protecting the credit union from loss. This position also manages consumer loan portfolios in excess of $50,000,000, making crucial decisions to maintain profitable, low risk high yield portfolios. This position is responsible for maintaining influential working relationships with internal/external contacts by fostering profitable, professional business relationships.

Essential Functions, in Priority Order (Majority of duties, but not meant to be all inclusive or prevent other duties from being assigned as necessary)
Provide leadership and coaching to ensure competencies and professionalism of team while monitoring and analyzing production and delinquency reports relating to the consumer loan portfolio. Leading underwriting operations and processes while building and reinforcing relationships through efficient response network applications and service request. Time: 50%
Responsible for coaching and mentoring the Consumer Underwriters for improved performance, problem solving, decision making, and adherence to SLAs.
Responsible for scheduling, performance appraisals for Consumer Underwriters and Senior Consumer Underwriters, team training, participation on project teams.
Responsible for department personnel matters such as interviewing hiring, and onboarding new team members.
Handle negotiations with MSA’s and Dealer Finance Managers on building and finalizing loan requests. Time: 25%
Assist Consumer Underwriters with second look decision requests.
Support network branches and dealers with quick decisions regarding loan requests.
Act as primary source of information about all Credit Union loan products for network partners and branches.
Coach, train and develop our dealer partners and front line staff on how to build and submit quality loans applications that ensure profitable partnerships.
Perform underwriting of all exceptional, higher-risk loan applications for our Network Branches/Dealers. Time: 15%
Document all exceptions to loan guidelines detailing requirements and specifications in the lending platform.
Contribute to achievement of team goals for all consumer loan production by accurately underwriting loan applications received from network branches and dealerships within prescribed timelines.
Protect the credit union from risk by maintaining acceptable delinquency, ensuring profitable consumer loan portfolios.
Monitor and identify changes in overall quality of incoming applications to allow management to prepare for changes in portfolio performance.
Obtain and maintain a high level of knowledge of all Credit Union products. Time: 5%
Review, update and maintain working guidelines and post on SharePoint/ Underwriting Department. Recommend updates of procedures and guidelines and make recommendations as needed to the Quality Team. Time: 5%
Education (Minimum education required to perform the duties of this position)
Bachelors degree in related field or two years of related work experience required.
Experience (Minimum experience required to perform the duties of this position)
In addition to the education requirement:
Five years of consumer loan underwriting experience required.
Two years managerial experience preferred.
NMLS registration required.

Physical Demands (Physical effort generally associated with this position)
Work involves standing and walking for brief periods of time, but most work is done from a seated position. There is potential for eyestrain from reading the computer screen. Must be able to talk and keyboard simultaneously. Deadlines, workloads and pressure to achieve goals may cause increased stress levels.

Internal - Work is normally performed in climate controlled office environment, where exposure to conditions of extreme heat/cold, poor ventilation, fumes and gases is very limited. Length of day is unpredictable; long hours may be required to accommodate deadlines or special meetings.
